How to Load Tapes and Reels into Feeders

Before installing the reels onto the machine, you must first load the tapes and reels into the feeders. For this guide, an 8mm feeder is used as an example. Watch our tutorial video here.

Checklist for Success

  1. Correct Feeder Size: Confirm that you are using the correct feeder size for your tape reel. This guide uses an 8mm feeder as an example
  2. Pitch Settings: Check the pitch value. For an 8mm feeder, this is fixed at 4mm. Larger feeders usually require adjustment.
  3. Feeder Labeling: Label each feeder with the component’s footprint and value for easy reference during data entry.

Steps for Success

Once you've identified the correct size feeder for your tape reel and determined the correct pitch, look over the Feeder Diagram below. This diagram should be used as a reference to understand what each part is called and where it's located as you complete each step.

Feeder Diagram

When you're ready to begin, gather your tape reel and feeder and ensure you have a flat surface to work on. Now complete each step to successfully load your tape reel into a feeder.

  1. Insert the Tape Reel
    1. Slide the tape reel into the feeder until it rests against the stopper. Ensure the tape’s direction of feed is positioned to move clockwise. Pull both the carrier tape and cover tape forward to the front opening of the Tape Guide Frame.
  2. Raise the Tape Guide Frame
    1. To allow the carrier tape to move freely through the opening, you need to raise the Tape Guide Frame. For easier access, you can rotate the feeder to the back is facing up.
    2. Raise the Locking Handle to its open position. Then push up on the Manual Lever located on the side of the Tape Guide Frame. While pushing this up, simultaneously press down on the Manual Advance Button until the Tape Guide Frame pops open. This will lock the frame open, allowing the carrier tape to move freely through the opening.
  3. Install the Carrier Tape
    1. Slide only the carrier tape under the front opening of the Tape Guide Frame.
    2. Peel back the cover tape as needed without exposing any components.
    3. Move the tape forward until the sprocket holes on the tape align with the gear spikes. If the tape gets stuck, twist or wiggle it side-to-side or up-and-down until it fits properly.
  4. Install the Cover Tape
    1. Pull the cover tape toward the front opening of the Tape Guide Frame.
    2. Pinch the cover tape between your fingers and slide it under the Tape Guide Frame from the side, then pull it up through the open slot on top. Ensure the tape is not twisted.
    3. Once both tapes are positioned correctly, lower the frame back into place by pressing the Manual Advance Button.
  5. Advance the Carrier tape
    1. To advance the carrier tape, press down on the Manual Advance Button continuously.
    2. While advancing, pull the cover tape taut as it shifts, ensuring it remains in place.
    3. Continue advancing the tape until you have enough cover tape to go over both pulleys and the Cover Tape Advancing Wheels.
  6. Secure the Cover Tape
    1. To lock the cover tape in place, pull the cover tape away from the Tape Guide Frame and position it over the Upper Guide Pulley
    2. Pull the cover tape down and over the Lower Guide Pulley toward the Cover Tape Advancing Wheels.
    3. While holding the cover tape in place, push the Idler Wheel away from the Drive Wheel.
    4. Pull the cover tape down and position it flat against the Drive wheel
    5. Ensure the tape is not twisted, then lower the Idler Wheel back into place to lock the cover tape between the Cover Tape Advancing Wheels
  7. Final Adjustments
    1. Make a few final adjustments by aligning the carrier tape using the Manual Advance Button. This allows you to install your feeders and program your machine more efficiently.
    2. Press the Manual Advance Button continuously to align the carrier tape.
    3. Advance the tape forward until the components in the tape are positioned just before the opening of the Tape Guide Frame. Stop advancing the tape when the components are in place to be picked up by the nozzle.
    4. To prevent exposure or damage, it is not recommended to advance the tape until the components are exposed.

When finished, remember to label your feeder with the component's footprint and value for easy reference during installation and programming. Your tape and reel is now be properly loaded and your feeder is ready for use. Happy assembling!
